Abstract

Joseph Schacht is the most prominent figure among those Orientalists, who have studied Islamic literature in detail. Schacht have also written many books on that topic. He also presented several theories to proof authenticity of hadith. Among those theories, ‘common link theory’ and ‘family isnad theory’ received significant importance in modern western world. He claims that, many hadith writers have very carefully prepared false isnad and they have attributed/assigned those isnad towards prophets. In this regard, he presented the credible and robust certification of Muwatta Imam Malik as an example and tried to prove that because of such isnad, false Schacht’s hadith have been attributed/assigned towards prophets. In this article, we will discuss the reality of Schacht’s common link theory and the objections made on Muwatta Imam Malik due to Schacht’s theory.
