Abstract

I praise Allah the Almighty for his countless blessings. After Allah's praise, it is submitted that Abul Qasimal-Zamakhashari is a prominent figure in language and literature. He left behind him a huge beneficial knowledge as his inheritance. As such, the number of his writings reaches fifty. He was an expert in many fields of knowledge due to which his writings consisted of Tafseer, Hadith, Language, Semantics, Literature, Translation, Figh, Hikam and Arabic idioms, geography etc.

One of the most important and eminent writing is his Tafseer (Al-Khashaf). This is a book not preceded by a similar write up. Some of the distinguishing features of this Tafseer are as follows.

1. Al-Zamakhshari is the first scholar to differentiate between the terms metonymy and indirect reference even though some scholars consider these synonyms.
2. He is the first scholar to invent the term Infiltrative Metaphor which is defined as the one which is in harmong with must'ar minhu in terms of features or words.
3. He is also the first figure to invent Istiarah bil-Kinayah which is defined as application of mushabbah and deletion of mushabbah bihi along with intending its metaphorical meaning that it is deriganed for.
4. Al-Zamamkhshari did not mention Israili traditions in his tafseer.
5. He also did not go into unnecessary details in his tafseer.
6. His style in this tafseer is the explanation of different linguistic and grammatical and semantic perspectives.
7. He relied upon Arabic language and rhetoric style in dealing with stylistics.
8. He mentioned the views of the companions of the Prophet peace be upon him and their successors in tafseer. As a result he first argued from linguistics and then brought the language of Arabs as evidence.
9. He paid attention to linguistic sciences consisting of the meaning of words and rhetoric in full detail.
10. He also pointed out many of the ambiguities that none of his predecessors paid attention to.
11. He utilized the style of "question and answer" in the context of addressing the issues related to rhetoric, while explaining the meanings of verses of the holy Quran.

It is worth mentioning that the list of features of this tafseer is lengthy but we have listed only a few of these features. in spite of the efforts that I have put in this research, it is not free of mistakes just like any other human effort. Therefore whatever is correct in this is the blessing of Allah and his ability given to me. And whatever is incorrect here is from my side and from the side of evil/ Satan.
